Woodworking Bench End Caps

woodworking bench end caps

Remove the bolt and the end caps can be tapped off with a dead blow mallet. complete the installation by trimming the back end of each end cap flush with the back of the top. build the vise. the double screw vise on this bench (fig. e) was commonly used in the 18th and 19th centuries by both english and colonial american cabinetmakers.. The front slab of the split-top roubo has a nice thick end cap that facilitates the attachment of the tail vise hardware and also stabilizes the front apron. option #1. the original benchcrafted version features a beautiful massive dovetail. the dovetail is glued to the end cap and the slab tenon is secured to the end cap using bolts.. I screwed a couple of stops on the end of the bench for boards to hold against while planing but there was nothing on the other side to hold it tight. and, when i was planing, the whole bench racked back and forth resulting in much wasted energy. the more work i did on this bench the more i realized i needed a new one..

Start with the end caps. the end caps (a and b, fig. a, below, and cutting list, below) anchor both jaws. they also keep the bench top flat. start with two 1-3/4″ x 3-3/4″ maple blanks that are about 6″ longer than the width of the bench top. use the tablesaw to cut a 7/8″ wide dovetail-shaped groove on the inside face of each end cap. Higher quality benches dress the top ends with end caps. sometimes featuring dovetails or box joints and one or more bolts, end caps help keep the top flat and cover the end grain while allowing the top to expand and contract across its width. some woodworkers find a tool well handy for containing frequently used items..
