How To Clean Wood After Sanding Polyurethane

how to clean wood after sanding polyurethane

I generally start at 80 grit and end with 100 or 120 grit. sanding through all the grits to 220 grit won’t improve the finish one bit. but with closed-grained woods like maple or birch, don’t skip any grit steps, and go all the way to 220 grit. tip 2: maintain a clean work area. a clean work area is key.. Sand the dried and cured first coat of polyurethane no sooner than 24 hours after applying it. use a very fine-grit abrasive, sanding with the grain of the wood. remove the sanding dust first with. It is good to use a shop vac to clean the surface between sanding grits, removing the larger grit particles from the wood before sanding with the next higher grit. while blowing the dust off with compressed air removes the dust, it also mixes it into the air so some of it can settle back onto the surface and so you can breath it..

To start the project, sand the wood surface with a 320 or 400 grit sandpaper to remove minor surface defects from the wood. clean the sanded wood surface with a tack cloth before applying the first coat of polyurethane. the tack cloth will remove small particles of wood dust created by the light sanding.. Clean unfinished wood with a damp rag before staining. this means you have to use a type of cleaning solution that gets rid of buildup without leaving any residue behind, as the stain won't properly absorb otherwise..
